"Escape" is a completely unjudgmental story about the escape of a cocaine smuggler from a high security prison in Thailand, that is told with no lean towards any kind of excuse for the use and smuggling of cocaine. There is plenty of food for thought regarding the usefulness of prisons. The mentality of the kind of people who get involved in crime and whether the kind of prison that is decribed is in any way a solution to the social problem of drugs and crime as we are led to see it today.Do we perhaps need a complete change of vision on the whole idea of crime? On the whole idea of drugs being illegal? After all alcohol is not illegal, cigarettes are not illegal, but both of them play a devastating role in destroying the lives of many people. How many lives are saved by putting drug smugglers into prison? More or less that if the drugs were legal and controlled by governments or the national health services, or some other body? Not an easy question to answer but nevertheless a question that needs to be tackled better than now.
