Alexander Macris has written a book that probably should have been written in 1988, but 30 years later looks both too obvious and too late.As someone with a 40-year history as a DM, I found little in this book with which to disagree. But neither did I find very much I didn’t already know. It is perhaps unfair to judge the book from that vantage point, and it is also possible that some fans who have come to roleplaying games during the 90s or later will find Macris’s ideas to be new and stimulating. To such readers I say, “Go ye forth and read the collected wisdom of E. Gary Gygax on DMing, and that without delay.”Macris’s critique of linear design and the current emphasis on “storytelling” is lucid, but there is no compelling perspective that anchors it. Nowhere, for instance, does he attempt to connect the trend to the prevailing corporate schemes in the industry. This may be partly because he is embedded in the industry he critiques. What is needed is some insider-outsider discussion of the tension between the growing popularity of rpgs and the corporate control that underwrites it, together with a manifesto allowing players to break free of that control without killing the proverbial goose. Macris, alas, is not up to the task. Of course, neither was TSR; Gygax’s DMG tried to emphasize individual creativity over slavish endebtedness to a commercial setting, but events showed that the business model implicit in this outlook was impractical at best.If Macris had hoped to succeed where Gygax failed (a laudable if presumptuous expectation), this book is at best a quixotic gesture. First, Macris’s writing wants the boyish enthusiasm for fantasy worlds that was characteristic of EGG, a quality that made the purple prose of the original DMG so surprisingly stimulating to the imagination. Rather, he writes with the passionless clarity one might expect from anyone unfortunate enough to have been subjected to three years of Harvard Law School. Which brings me to my second point. Even if corporate-supported ideology were susceptible to logic and argument (it isn’t), Macris is simply not influential enough in the industry to have such an impact. That his influence has been further undercut by his shadowy connection to the alt-right is, in this respect especially, unfortunate. It isn’t my intention to call his argument into question by pointing to his presumed political opinions, which after all have little to do with his ideas about games. Unfortunately, a significant number of gamers from a younger generation than mine do not share this protocol. Since these are the very gamers Macris presumably intends to reach (many who already agree with him, like myself, hardly require a book to validate the perspective they already hold), it seems unlikely that his hope will come to fruition.The testimonials on the back cover suggest Macris is not only a capable but an excellent GM. I found myself more curious to run as a player in one of his campaigns than I was eager to listen to his ideas about gaming in the abstract. His directions on how to develop a campaign setting may be a helpful primer, as one reviewer put it, for someone new to rpgs (so would a thoughtful reading of classic game modules). But if he can’t sell his own games because industry fans are alienated by his politics, he is unlikely, in this book, to create a groundswell of opinion in favor of his more classical perspective. Which is a shame because, as far as rpgs are concerned, Macris is right.
